Zelensky Pleads for Air Defence Interceptors After Deadly Russian Attack on Kyiv

In the most intense ballistic missile assault directed at the Ukrainian capital since the war began, Russian forces pummelled Kyiv overnight, claiming at least one life and injuring sixteen others, according to a statement issued on Sunday by President Volodymyr Zelensky.

The attack, which unfolded across the darkened city with a succession of thunderous detonations, comprised forty-one projectiles of varied specifications and inflicted grievous damage upon buildings in multiple districts, from residential blocks and warehouses to a supermarket and a student hostel, as detailed by Vitali Klitschko, the city’s mayor, who further noted that three individuals were in a serious condition.

Emergency crews in western Kyiv were later observed sifting through smouldering wreckage and hosing down apartment blocks that had been gutted by the blasts, while one local resident, who gave his name only as Vlad, recounted to Reuters that he had been inside his flat when the force of an explosion tore away his balcony door, propelling it into his head; he explained that his elderly grandmother, who is immobile, had been with him at the time, and that he could not have contemplated fleeing without her. Elsewhere, closer to the city centre, an underground pedestrian tunnel adjacent to a metro station that has been a repeated target of Russian strikes had collapsed, leaving a substantial mound of debris.

The uptick in ballistic strikes on Kyiv and other urban centres in recent weeks has been attributed by military analysts to a pronounced shortage of American-designed air defence systems on the Ukrainian side, a deficiency that has become increasingly critical as Moscow’s forces press their advantage. Kyiv’s military command reported that eighteen of the incoming missiles had been intercepted during Sunday’s assault, which was primarily directed at the capital, and that a further 108 out of 125 drones deployed in the same operation had also been shot down.

President Zelensky disclosed last week that the United States and Ukraine had reached a political accord regarding licensing arrangements for the domestic production of the highly coveted Patriot interceptor missiles, expressing his hope that manufacturing could commence before the close of the year.
