Ukrainian drone strikes on Moscow region kill one in major overnight attack

In what local officials have described as one of the most significant aerial assaults to target the Russian capital's environs, Ukrainian drones struck the Moscow region overnight on Sunday, claiming the life of an 83-year-old man and leaving several others injured, according to the provincial governor. Writing on the Telegram messaging service, Moscow Region Governor Andrei Vorobyov confirmed that the attack, which he characterised as one of the largest to have targeted the region, had caused fatalities and damage at multiple sites, including a warehouse belonging to Russia's largest online retailer, Wildberries, in the town of Podolsk. He further stated that damage had been inflicted at other locations, including a warehouse in the town of Domodedovo, situated in close proximity to one of Moscow's principal airports, underscoring the reach and intensity of the overnight bombardment.

The Russian Defence Ministry reported that its air defence systems had intercepted and downed a total of 822 Ukrainian drones across the country, a figure that highlights the scale of Kyiv's ongoing campaign of long-range strikes. Video footage captured by Reuters of the aftermath of the strike on the Wildberries warehouse in Koledino, located approximately 45 kilometres (28 miles) south of Moscow, showed a large plume of smoke billowing over the site, indicative of the damage inflicted. Ukraine has intensified its targeting of Wildberries in recent weeks, accusing the retail giant of handling military goods and thereby constituting a legitimate component of Russia's logistics network that supports its military campaign. This strategy forms part of a wider Ukrainian effort to degrade Russian economic infrastructure that Kyiv views as underpinning Moscow's war effort.

The attack on the Moscow region was not an isolated incident, with reports of coordinated strikes elsewhere. The regional governor of Belgorod, a region that borders eastern Ukraine, confirmed that one person had been killed in a drone strike on a bus near the southern Russian city of Belgorod. In a separate development, Ukraine's military claimed to have struck a missile fuel production facility in the Rostov region overnight, a report that had not been immediately commented on by Russian authorities at the time of publication. The latest attacks come amid an intensification of Ukraine's drone campaign deep inside Russian territory, targeting not only military infrastructure but also what Kyiv identifies as economic assets that contribute to Moscow's war-making capabilities.
