Ukrainian Drone Strikes High-Rise in Yekaterinburg, Injuring Four

A Ukrainian drone has struck a high-rise apartment building in the city of Yekaterinburg, injuring four people, as Kyiv's forces targeted a logistics hub owned by Russia's largest online retailer, Wildberries. The attack, which caused damage to several apartments and sparked fires throughout the city, according to independent media and local residents, marks a significant escalation in Ukraine's campaign against Russian infrastructure far from the front lines.

Sverdlovsk region Governor Denis Pasler confirmed that four people were injured in the attack, while Artyom Zhoga, President Vladimir Putin's representative to the Urals Federal District, said several apartments were damaged. Photos on social media showed damage to the upper floors of a high-rise residential building, underscoring the risks to civilians as drone warfare reaches deeper into Russian territory. Wildberries, which has been targeted before, told Russian media that employees at its logistics hub in Yekaterinburg were evacuated and that the facility itself was not damaged.

The strike on Yekaterinburg, a city in the Ural Mountains more than 1,500 kilometres from Ukraine, follows a pattern of Ukrainian attacks on Russian logistics and retail infrastructure. Kyiv has accused Wildberries of supplying the Russian military with drone parts and other equipment, making its facilities legitimate military targets. The attack came as part of a wider drone offensive, with Russia's Defence Ministry claiming it intercepted 239 Ukrainian drones across the country and in annexed Crimea overnight. In Moscow, Mayor Sergei Sobyanin reported at least six drones were intercepted on approach to the capital, while officials reported multiple injuries in the Bryansk and Kursk regions. Falling drone debris sparked a wildfire in the Rostov region, and airports across the country introduced temporary flight restrictions amid the attacks.

Russia's unprovoked invasion of Ukraine, now in its fifth year, has brought the war to its own doorstep, with Ukrainian forces striking deep into Russian territory in response to Moscow's brutal campaign against Ukrainian cities and infrastructure. The Kremlin's aggression has made Russian logistics hubs, including those associated with companies like Wildberries, legitimate targets for a nation defending its sovereignty against an unprovoked assault.
