Three Men Convicted of Violent Disorder After Asylum Hotel Protest Descends into Chaos in Essex

Three men have been convicted of violent disorder following a large-scale protest outside an asylum hotel in Essex that descended into serious public disturbances, a trial at Chelmsford Crown Court has concluded. The demonstration, which saw up to 500 people congregate outside The Bell Hotel in Epping on 17 July, was triggered by the news that a migrant residing at the premises had been charged with—and subsequently imprisoned for—sexual offences.

Keith Silk, 33, of Torrington Drive, Loughton; Jonathan Glover, 47; and Charlie Land, 24, were found by a jury to have formed part of what the court heard was an "aggressive mob" among the wider crowd. The defendants, who hail from Essex and Hertfordshire, are now due to be sentenced on 19 August. Prosecutors told the court that while the protest had begun peacefully, it deteriorated into "serious public disorder" at approximately half past five in the afternoon. This escalation followed the arrival of some 50 counter-demonstrators, which precipitated clashes between the two groups.

Essex Police confirmed that one officer sustained injuries to the neck during the confrontations on 17 July. In a dramatic twist, Silk was captured on camera hurling a bottle at a police vehicle and attempting to wrench a hotel sign from the ground. The matter came to light after extensive video evidence was reviewed by investigators. The case is understood to have been closely monitored by local authorities concerned about the potential for further unrest surrounding asylum accommodation in the region.
