Senior Russian officer killed in Crimea bomb blast

A senior Russian military officer has been killed in a targeted bombing in annexed Crimea, according to Kremlin-installed officials and the Federal Security Service (FSB), with the explosion occurring around 10 a.m. local time on a street in western Sevastopol, the home port of Russia's Black Sea Fleet, the news outlet Ostorozhno Novosti reported. Citing the FSB, the outlet said an explosive device had been placed in a trash can and detonated as the officer walked past, with the security agency subsequently confirming the death of a Russian Defence Ministry serviceman while declining to disclose his identity, according to state news agencies. The FSB announced the arrest of a 32-year-old Russian woman who, it alleged, had acted on instructions from Ukrainian special services, with Mikhail Razvozhayev, the Kremlin-installed governor of Sevastopol, stating that investigators had established she showed no remorse for her actions.

Unverified reporting by Ostorozhno Novosti claimed to identify the suspect as Margarita Reutt, a resident of the southern Russian resort city of Sochi who had volunteered to clean up oil from beaches in nearby Anapa and ran her own business, and who was previously fined by a court in August 2025 for "discrediting" the Russian military over public remarks made on a train in response to news of a Ukrainian drone strike. Telegram channels with links to Russia's security services, meanwhile, claimed to identify the victim as Captain First Rank Robert Shageyev, who had previously commanded the Ukrainian Navy's only submarine before defecting to Russia during the 2014 annexation of Crimea and who reportedly served as deputy commander of a Russian Black Sea Fleet submarine brigade, though The Moscow Times was unable to independently verify the details of those reports. Razvozhayev also said earlier that five people had been killed overnight during an operation to dispose of an explosive device, adding to the heightened security alert in the region.
