Moscow and Kyiv conduct rare PoW exchange as war grinds on
The first prisoner exchange between Russia and Ukraine since June sees 103 soldiers from each side returned to their home countries following UAE mediation, with another swap expected before month's end.
Russia and Ukraine have exchanged 103 prisoners of war each in the first such swap since June, following mediation from the United Arab Emirates, Russian and Ukrainian officials confirmed on Wednesday. President Volodymyr Zelensky posted video and photographs of Ukrainian servicemen being freed in the exchange, which was also confirmed by Ukraine’s military intelligence chief, Oleh Ivashchenko, who said another swap was expected before the end of the month.
Russia’s Defence Ministry said its released servicemen were now in Belarus undergoing medical and mental health evaluations. Yana Lantratova, Russia’s human rights commissioner, said she met her Ukrainian counterpart, Dmytro Lubinets, during the exchange, and that they had “exchanged lists of missing persons, discussed documentation matters and agreed on the next humanitarian shipment of care packages”. Photographs and video of their meeting in Belarus were shared on Telegram.
Both sides have released hundreds of prisoners this year through mediation from the United States and the UAE. While the latest swap offers a rare moment of humanitarian co‑operation in Moscow’s unprovoked war against Ukraine, the fundamental conflict remains unresolved, with Russian forces continuing their brutal campaign against Ukrainian civilians and infrastructure.
