Guardian Australia appoints Hayley Waller to lead branded content division Guardian Labs
The Guardian has appointed Hayley Waller as head of Guardian Labs in Australia, with the publisher emphasising the growing importance of trust and audience relationships in an increasingly fragmented advertising market.

The Guardian has appointed Hayley Waller as head of Guardian Labs in Australia, the publisher's branded content and creative division, entrusting the seasoned commercial executive with oversight of its storytelling operations in the region. Waller joins the organisation with a breadth of experience spanning media, content and commercial leadership roles on both sides of the globe, having previously held a senior commercial position at oOh!media in Australia. Her career has also encompassed senior roles including head of digital audio at Nine Entertainment and head of brand partnerships at JOE Media in the United Kingdom, giving her a comprehensive understanding of the evolving relationship between publishers, advertisers and audiences. In her new capacity, Waller will be responsible for leading Guardian Labs, the division that develops branded content and creative solutions for commercial partners, a function that has become increasingly central to the publisher's business model in an era of shifting advertising dynamics.
Rebecca Costello, managing director of the Guardian in Australia and New Zealand, framed the appointment within the context of broader industry trends, observing that the advertising market was increasingly rewarding organisations capable of cultivating genuine relationships with audiences rather than merely capturing their fleeting attention. "As audiences spend more time across fragmented digital environments, trust has become one of the most valuable assets in media, for publishers and for brands alike," Costello said, adding that Guardian Labs represented a significant component of the publisher's response to that transformation. She pointed to a substantial opportunity for the Guardian to assist brands in participating in the trusted relationships the organisation had built with its readership through thoughtful, high-quality storytelling, a proposition that distinguished the publisher from competitors in an increasingly crowded marketplace. Waller will report to Danika Johnston, the Guardian's director of commercial partnerships for Australia, who expressed confidence that the new appointee brought a distinctive and valuable combination of capabilities to the role.
Johnston elaborated on Waller's expected contribution, noting that her leadership would drive creative excellence through content and storytelling, while also finding innovative and "brave" ways to deliver tangible impact and proof points for advertisers and partners. "She will bring audience intelligence and data into every campaign we deliver," Johnston added, underscoring the importance of evidence-based approaches in demonstrating commercial value to clients. Waller herself characterised the new role as an exciting opportunity, expressing her eagerness to collaborate with the team in creating impactful storytelling solutions for clients while continuing to elevate the role that quality content could play in delivering meaningful business outcomes. The appointment comes at a time when publishers globally are seeking to diversify revenue streams beyond traditional advertising models, with branded content and commercial partnerships having emerged as increasingly important pillars of sustainable media businesses. The Guardian's investment in Guardian Labs reflects a conviction that trust, rather than scale alone, will determine which publishers thrive in the evolving media landscape, and that the ability to connect brands with engaged and receptive audiences through authentic storytelling represents a competitive advantage that cannot be easily replicated.
