Fire breaks out at Russian Baltic port after Ukrainian drone strike

A major Russian Baltic Sea port serving as a critical hub for oil exports was hit by a Ukrainian drone attack on Friday, with a fire breaking out at the Ust-Luga facility before firefighters managed to extinguish the blaze later in the morning, according to Leningrad region Governor Alexander Drozdenko, who confirmed that no casualties had been reported but offered no details on the extent of the damage. The attack came amid a wave of Ukrainian long-range strikes, with Mr Drozdenko stating that air defences had shot down more than 50 drones overnight across the Leningrad region surrounding St. Petersburg, and the Defence Ministry reporting that a total of 553 Ukrainian drones had been intercepted across Russia and annexed Crimea between Thursday night and Friday morning. In a separate overnight incident, the governor of the neighbouring Tver region reported that drone debris had damaged an outer wall at a warehouse belonging to Wildberries, the major online retailer, marking the latest in a series of strikes targeting commercial logistics hubs, though no injuries were reported at that site.

The attacks on Russian territory occurred as authorities in the Belgorod region, which borders Ukraine, said that a person riding a bicycle had been struck and killed by a drone on Friday morning, underscoring the growing human toll of the drone campaign. The intensifying aerial warfare also spilled over into NATO territory, with military officials in Latvia confirming that NATO fighter jets had intercepted and shot down a drone that violated the Baltic country's airspace, while nearby Finland temporarily restricted movement in parts of the Baltic Sea to guard against potential air threats. The developments come amid escalating tensions in the Baltic region and a sharp increase in cross-border drone activity, with Ukraine appearing to have extended its reach to Russia's north-western ports and logistics networks, raising concerns about the vulnerability of critical infrastructure and the potential for further escalation.
