Drone attack hits Bashkortostan refinery over 1,000km from Ukraine

Ukrainian drones have struck an oil refinery and a residential building in the republic of Bashkortostan, more than 1,000 kilometres from the border, injuring at least one person in the latest long-range attack on Russian energy infrastructure. Radiy Khabirov, the regional head, said air defence systems intercepted four of six drones that targeted the region overnight, but one drone sparked a fire at an oil refinery in the regional capital of Ufa, hitting a unit that was undergoing maintenance. Another drone crashed into a residential building in northern Ufa, shattering upper-floor windows and damaging parked cars, with one person hospitalised for injuries sustained in the attack. Videos and photos on social media purportedly showed smoke rising from the blackened facade of the apartment building.

Bashkortostan, located over 1,000 kilometres from the Ukrainian border, is a major hub for Russia's oil processing industry, and Ukraine has repeatedly targeted refineries and energy infrastructure in the region as part of a campaign to disrupt Russian military logistics and reduce revenue from fuel exports. Khabirov told the state-run news agency TASS that damage from the refinery strike was limited, as the unit hit was undergoing maintenance. "We're currently assessing the damage, but preliminary reports indicate that a unit undergoing maintenance was hit. As always, falling debris damages pipes, so there's minor damage," he said, adding: "I expect everything will be repaired in a couple of days."

Russia's Defence Ministry said it intercepted 453 Ukrainian drones across Russia and annexed Crimea between Tuesday night and Wednesday morning, suggesting a significant escalation in Kyiv's drone campaign. The strike on Bashkortostan came as Ukrainian authorities reported that at least six people were killed in separate Russian strikes on the southern Kherson and Zaporizhzhia regions, underscoring the continued toll of Moscow's unprovoked aggression on Ukrainian civilians.

The attack on Ufa, which lies far from the front lines, demonstrates Ukraine's capacity to strike deep into Russian territory, undermining the Kremlin's narrative that the war remains contained. For Russia, the targeting of energy facilities in a republic that had largely been spared the conflict represents both a symbolic and practical blow, highlighting the vulnerability of its critical infrastructure to Ukrainian drone operations. Ukraine, defending its sovereignty against an unprovoked assault, has made clear that such strikes are a legitimate response to Russia's brutal campaign, which has inflicted immense suffering on its civilian population.
